About Monzo

Monzo is a UK-licensed digital bank founded in 2015 and headquartered in London. As of 2026, it serves more than 12 million personal customers and runs a growing business banking offer used by tens of thousands of UK sole traders and small companies. Monzo Bank Ltd is authorised by the Prudential Regulation Authority (PRA) and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA); customer deposits are protected up to £85,000 per person by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme.

The current Monzo refer-a-friend programme is a two-sided cash bonus: both the new customer and the existing customer who shared the invite earn the same amount.

Monzo referral bonus amounts in 2026

Two tiers are currently active:

Monzo Personal — £10 for both you and the referrer.
Monzo Business — £50 for both you and the referrer (Business Lite or Business Pro).

Bonuses are paid in cash directly into your new Monzo current account. Both amounts are flat — Monzo previously ran a randomised tier programme (£5 / £10 / £20 / £50, with both sides receiving the same tier), but the current invite uses fixed payouts.

What counts as a qualifying spend

After opening the account, the only thing you need to do is one card purchase within 30 days.

Counts: any in-store or online card payment with your Monzo card, including via Apple Pay or Google Pay.
Doesn't count: cash withdrawals from ATMs, bank transfers, Faster Payments, standing orders, direct debits.

A purchase as small as a £1.20 bus fare or a 99p Spotify top-up is enough to trigger the bonus. You don't need to top up a specific amount up front — Monzo dropped the £1 minimum top-up requirement when this programme launched.

If you're self-employed or run a UK limited company, the Business account makes sense both for the larger £50 bonus and because mixing personal and business spending creates accounting headaches at year-end. You can hold both a Personal and a Business Monzo account simultaneously.

How fast does the bonus arrive?

In recent customer reports the £10 personal bonus typically appears in the new customer's Monzo account within minutes of the qualifying card payment clearing, with a push notification confirming it. Business bonuses follow the same flow but can take a little longer if the spend was made on a Business Pro account.

Eligibility traps to avoid

The most common reasons a Monzo referral doesn't pay out:

You opened the app or started sign-up before. Even if you abandoned the application at the identity-verification step, Monzo's systems flag your phone number, email or device as "existing customer". You will not be eligible.
You signed up using a different number, then re-signed up. Same flag.
You opened the Monzo app without an invite first. Once a sign-up flow has started without a referral link, the link can't be retroactively attached.
You only made an ATM withdrawal. Cash withdrawals don't count toward the bonus — make at least one card purchase before the 30-day window closes.
You closed the account before the bonus paid out. Closing within the qualifying window cancels the bonus.
